Avventure a fumetti nel mondo degli Etruschi: an exhibition in Cetona between past and graphic novel Museo Civico per la Preistoria del Monte Cetona, Parco Archeologico Naturalistico and Archeodromo di Belverde
From 26 July to 31 December 2025, a remarkable exhibition of comic book pages and volumes tells the story of the Etruscans at the Museo Civico per la Preistoria del Monte Cetona.
Just over a year after the successful exhibition "Lucy. Sogno di un’evoluzione", curated by Comicon, the language of illustration returns to Cetona with a project that brings together archaeology, public outreach, and pop culture. Entitled “Avventure a fumetti nel mondo degli Etruschi”, the exhibition will open at the Museo Civico di Cetona on Saturday, 26 July at 5:00 PM and will remain on view until 31 December 2025.
At the heart of the exhibition is a rare private collection of comic books and illustrated volumes — generously loaned by the owners — that explore the world of the Etruscans in original, ironic, and captivating ways. The display spans from the 1930s to the present day, featuring major names from the world of graphic storytelling, including Mickey Mouse, Alix, Martin Mystère, Java, Mister No, and other iconic heroes (and anti-heroes).
The exhibition is organized into two sections within the museum and includes panels with reproductions of the most significant pages, along with an interactive experience that allows visitors to digitally browse additional illustrated stories on mobile devices. A small catalogue accompanies the exhibition, offering accessible texts and further insights into the theme.
An exhibition in the spirit of "the Etruscans project”
Curated by Giulio Paolucci and Maria Teresa Cuda, the exhibition is part of the celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the "The Etruscans 85–25 project", promoted by the Region of Tuscany with the involvement of numerous institutions and organizations. Although Etruscan evidence in the municipal territory is not a central focus of the museum’s permanent collection, Cetona has enthusiastically joined the initiative, recognizing the value of that cultural season which — following the original Progetto Etruschi — led to the creation or renewal of many local archaeological museums.
On this occasion, the museum also renews one of its core missions: promoting illustrated language as an accessible and powerful form of communication, capable of telling the story of humankind with immediacy and imagination.
A graphic legacy that lives on
Avventure a fumetti nel mondo degli Etruschi continues an exhibition journey that the Museo Civico di Cetona has pursued for some time, dedicated to graphic art and talented illustrators. Following Lucy, notable past exhibitions include Grandi mammiferi del Quaternario by Alessandro Mangione (1999) and Disegnare l’archeologia. La preistoria nelle illustrazioni di Mauro Cutrona (2011).
Once again, drawing becomes a bridge between past and present, offering new perspectives on history and inviting a broad, diverse audience to discover — through comics — one of the most fascinating civilizations of antiquity: that of the Etruscans.
