A summer series in the heart of one of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries in recent decades: the thermal sanctuary of San Casciano dei Bagni, where between 2022 and 2024 numerous perfectly preserved bronze statues from the Etruscan and Roman periods were unearthed.

Starting on Saturday, 5 July 2025, and continuing every Saturday throughout the summer at 5:00 PM, a guided archaeological walk offers an immersive journey through the millennia-old history of the area. The itinerary begins with a visit to the Stanze Cassianensi, the small museum located in the atrium of the Palazzo Comunale of San Casciano dei Bagni, where selected artifacts are on display and the story of the sacred site is told through images, videos, and excavation materials.

The walk then continues to the archaeological area of the sanctuary, a unique place where worship, nature, and health intertwine. For centuries, the Etruscans and Romans deposited votive offerings, statues, coins, and inscriptions in the sacred thermal pools, set in a striking landscape still today nourished by warm, healing waters.

The discovery of the bronzes

The sanctuary of San Casciano dei Bagni is now in the global spotlight thanks to the extraordinary discovery of bronze statues dating from the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century CE, unearthed between 2022 and 2024. This is the most significant recovery of Etruscan and Roman bronzes in Italy in recent years. The statues — still intact and protected by centuries of sediment from the thermal waters — depict deities, worshippers, medical symbols, and inscriptions in both Etruscan and Latin, bearing witness to a shared religious and cultural space between two civilizations.
These finds have opened up new perspectives on southern Etruria and the ritual use of thermal waters in antiquity. Some of the bronzes will be housed in the new museum currently being designed, but the visit already offers an unforgettable glimpse of this extraordinary discovery.
